We recommend starting vaginal cytologys on the 4th day of the female’s heat cycle. A vaginal cytology should be performed every other day until the results indicate a fertile period.  We obtain a sample by using a swab and passing it into the anterior vagina.  The swab is rolled out on a slide, air dried, fixed and stained.  The slide is then examined under the microscope for the degree of cornification.
