Timing of a surgical insemination is determined by progesterone levels and vaginal cytology results. The bitch is anesthetized using gas and pre-anesthetic medications.  A small incision is made similar to a spay.  The uterus is brought to the surface and the semen sample is deposited in the uterus via a catheter. The bitch is normally ready to go home later in the day.
